NBA Lockout

As well all know the NBA is currently in the midst of a lockout, players and owners have yet to reach an agreement on a new CBA (collective bargaining agreement) resulting in the 1st two weeks of the regular season to be canceled this past Monday. Owners claim they are losing money, which in all honesty is probably true, but the players aren't giving in and still want the majority of basketball related income. An NBA roster is only allowed 15 players, that would come out to 450 players on team rosters during the season; plus all the free agents (aprox. between 100-200 players even though some probably have other jobs), your looking at about 600 or so players being affected by the lockout. So how are both sides going to reach an agreement to save the season, or even save the NBA as a whole?

Some NBA stars, such as Deron Williams (Nets PG), are playing overseas during the lockout; showing that they have another place to play if the NBA cancels the season. Players might think this helps them, but in all reality it shows a lack of unity between the players if stars are going to play elsewhere and not help resolve the issue. Amare Stoudemire (Knicks PF/C) has even said they might start their own league, highly unlikely seeing as it would take quite a while to make a whole new basketball league plus all the money and planning involved. Greed of the players is also showing, such as not pushing to a 50/50 split of basketball related income with the owners. They might now think they are being greedy, but they are. So I don't want to hear NBA players like Kevin Durant saying the owners are the ones who locked us out, when in all reality you contributed to yourself being locked out.

What is needed for a deal to get done? Well the players are going to have to give in somehow in all seriousness; weather it be, less of the BRI (basketball related income), wage scales, or a different salary cap. Franchise owners don't buy teams to make money, they make money else how and they will continue to do so. I'm not trying to fully blame the players for the lockout happening, but the fact they say that it's all the owners and not them is just absurd.
